1:1 Tuition & Mentoring

One-to-one support led by a qualified tutor, shaped entirely around the young person. Sessions give children who are struggling to cope in a mainstream classroom the space to feel safe first, and learn second.

What mentoring/1:1 tuition involves

For many of the young people we work with, the barrier isn't ability, it's feeling safe enough to try. Before moving into schoolwork, sessions focus on building a relationship with a trusted adult and helping the young person feel calm, secure and confident. Curriculum learning, exam preparation and skill-building follow from there, at whatever pace the child or young person needs.

We believe that meaningful learning starts with relationships, trust and emotional safety.

Our approach is different:

A recreation room with a pool table, a Connect Four game, a foosball table, a computer station, and chairs. There are bulletin boards and posters on the walls, and a painted tree with apples on the left.

BLAP, our adventure setting in Blackbird Leys

How It Works

Sessions are weekly and always one-to-one, delivered in the setting that best suits the young person:

  • In school, alongside their existing setting

  • At BLAP, our adventure setting in Blackbird Leys, a relaxed, informal space designed to build confidence, resilience and independence away from a traditional classroom

  • Online

  • At home (With a parent or carer present throughout)

Working with Schools and Local Authorities

1:1 Tuition & Mentoring is also delivered as commissioned Alternative Provision, working in partnership with schools, Multi-Academy Trusts and Local Authorities. Placements are set up around the individual referral, with regular progress reviews involving the young person, parents or carers, and the referring school or LA. Where appropriate, sessions form part of a wider reintegration plan back into mainstream or specialist education.
